Truck driving is definitely not for the weak of heart.  It is a demanding job that requires flexibility, skill, stamina, and attention to detail.  Plus, many truck drivers spend several days at a time away from home.  While it can be challenging to be away for extended periods of time, truck driving is also an exciting and rewarding job that allows you the opportunity to explore and see new sights.  Using your time at home wisely can impact your time on the road.

Check out the top ten ways to make sure you make the most of your time at home.

  1. Spend quality     time with your kids and spouse.

This one may seem obvious, but in today’s world of hustle and bustle combined with the overuse of technology, it can be easy to lose sight of what quality time looks like with family.  Take time to unplug and spend genuine time together.  Go for walks, trips to the park, and play games. Be intentional in the time you have with them.

  1. Catch up with     friends and family.

A large part of your time on the road will be spent with people you do not know.  Your daily interactions will be with customers, shipping clerks, waitresses and other truck drivers. Take the time to build quality relationships with those you have at home.

  1. Partake in a     home cooked meal.

No matter how hard you try, the reality of your job means that you will be eating out a great deal while you are on the road.  And while there are some really great restaurants, nothing can quite beat a home cooked meal.

  1. Spend time     doing what you love.

Being on the road takes a great deal of your time.  Take some time when you are home to recharge by doing what you love.

  1. Learn a new     hobby.

It never seems like there is enough time to accomplish everything we would like to.  That is even truer when your time at home is limited. Find the time to learn something you have always wanted to do.  You will thank yourself!

  1. Catch up on     things around the house.

That to do list around the house never seems to end.  Tackle a few projects each time you are home to ensure your list doesn’t become over whelming and to feel that sense of accomplishment.

  1. Take advantage     of outdoor activities near you.

The majority of your time on the road will be spent indoors, whether that is in your cab or inside truck stops and restaurants.  Make a point to schedule a barbecue, fishing trip, or just a walk in the park when you’re at home.

  1. Exercise.

Because a large part of your on the road time will be spent in a sedentary fashion, it’s important be active when you are home.  Something like a daily bike ride or lifting weights can have a huge impact on your physical and emotional health.

  1. Loosen up &     straighten out.

The technology used in seating designs for truck drivers have come along way. Many cabs have seats equipped with the most up to date ergonomics. Even with that, the truth is you spend a great deal of time in a seated position.  Things can easily become stiff and achy.  A visit to the chiropractor or a deep-tissue massage can help stretch out stiff muscles and straighten out your alignment.

  1. Take a day trip     with people you love.

I am sure you have all come across places while you’re on the road that you know a family member or friend would love to see.  Take the time to show them!
